Would I read another after Blood's a Rover? The impossible-to-summarize plot is a sprawling, twisting beast of a thing involving several million in stolen emeralds, mob-financed casinos, COINTELPRO, generational blood feuds, assassination plots, and revolution and repression in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This is a deeply weird voodoo-infused book that crowns the majestically bonkers USA Underworld Trilogy with gentleness and poetic trippiness. You recall the time this narrative captures and sense conspiracy.

Maybe I missed Pierre Bondurant, I dunno but this was a tale of two books for me.

It begins characteristically with a vivid flashback: a cinematically violent description of a highway robbery, LA-style, in 1964. Since then, much of that potential has dissipated. It's not pleasant. By the end of The Cold Six Thousand the figures of hope are dead and Richard Milhous Nixon is waiting in the wings. And much of the plot just feels hackneyed and forced.

Initially hard to get into - partly due to the short, clipped sentences and the use of slang - I became engaged in seeing what happened. Are you sure you want to delete this comment? And though Joan is nearly as compromised as the numerous rightwing characters, Ellroy finally makes it clear that his sympathies are with her and what she stands for. Nearly 20 years after he started work, James Ellroy's Underworld USA Trilogy is finally complete.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Marshall is a closet homosexual with an agenda of his own, and Karen is a left-wing activist who passes information on radicals to the FBI in exchange for favours for some her revolutionary friends. It's a seedy, erratic, bloody and compassionate masterpiece. This review originally appeared on Neville's blog page.

The American novelist described the series as a "secret history" of the mid-to-late twentieth century. In an unexpected metafictional twist, Joan and Dwight start planning a violent event that will break the story wide open, which they discuss like novelists ("It densifies every level of our subtext"). Not for the faint of heart. But then Ellroy has never specialized in "nice" characters.

His aim is to retell in a new, illuminating way the more turbulent episodes in late 20th-century American history from the point of view of those involved at both the highest levels of political power and the lowest levels of criminal activity. The characters in Blood's a Rover fascinate Ellroy because they follow their dreams, and the results are terrible but revelatory. In fact, I've been lucky enough to have him write me back in a personal message on F-book to tell me to "Go F yourself. The immensely complicated and skilfully orchestrated plotlines contain most of the usual ingredients: heroin, psychopathic Cuban exiles, a cab business used as a crime hub, and a Mob attempt to replace the lost Havana casinos, this time by building in the Dominican Republic. Blood's a Rover is not a book for the politically correct reader, nor the overly sensitive one. Corruption, in Ellroy's world, is always total and extreme. This is not an easy read, the story will serpent back and eat any one of its multiple tails, more than once. Ellroy does redemption. The following pages will force you to succumb. But, as he also explained to another critic, reading Don DeLillo's Libra had inspired him to try something newer and bigger: "Fuck being a crime novelist when you can be a flat-out great novelist". Given the short chapters, short paragraphs and short sentences, one would expect a fast-paced read, but that is not the case. Almost killed Ellroy writing it.

Ellroy began his trilogy after finishing the quartet of Los Angeles-set crime novels that made him famous, in which plotlines concerning serial killers, police corruption and shady political manoeuvrings gradually thicken and merge and turn out to be connected by long-buried master-crimes. It is Crutch, the most shady and sordid of the triumvirate of central characters, who redeems himself, emerging from the wreckage of the time to testify to its cataclysmic import. I am reading the advance copy. Don't hit more if you don't want to see them. As Ellroy once explained to me, "I just like to write about pervert killers with wolverine teeth". In its serious aspects, then, Blood's a Rover can be mildly silly in comparison with the tightly controlled American Tabloid.
