Though I probably wouldn’t have chosen Griffin or Theo as my best friends, they are memorable and Silvera’s writing is worthy of praise. I don’t usually like books that use a time-hop storytelling style because I find that it weakens the development of the plot (if there is one). Silvera’s voice is honest. I did have difficulties continuing to read because it’s not easy to care about fictional characters who are already dead.

I prefer plot-driven stories and History is All You Left Me is definitely character-driven.

Since then I’ve had More Happy Than Not and History is All You Left Me on my wishlist, but haven’t been quite ready for the heartbreak yet! You know this.

That was finally changed when I came across They Both Die at the End & What If It’s Us. ( Log Out /  Great review!! Change ). But readers learn via Griffin’s recounting of their history, that among all the happy times, there were also moments of confusion, frustration, and jealousy. . Even though Theo had moved to California for college and started seeing Jackson, Griffin never doubted Theo would come back to him… She/her/hers.

So I knew going in History is All You Left Me was going to be another heartbreaking Silvera read—I mean, the premise is clearly an emotional one—but wow, I did not anticipate just how powerful and important this book would be. While at college, Theo meets Jackson, whom Griffin has come to dislike immediately. The situation is sad, but I didn’t know him and he’s not real. They embark on a strange sort of companionship as readers gain insight into the very complex multiple histories of Theo and his relationships with those closest to him. The book alternate on what happen in the past (History) and now (Today) timeline. Regardless, the author writes in a way that led me to self-reflect and consider what I would have been like in their shoes. for honest & thoughtful literary musings. I was not the biggest fan of Griffin, Theo, or Jackson. That, I believe, is the purpose of this story.

Nevertheless, this is a lovely and thoughtful review! Theo is dead. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin’s downward spiral continues.

This was really interesting to me to read because the things that trigger Griffin and his compulsions are entirely different from the things that bothered me (and sometimes still do) at the height of my worst, uncontrolled probably-OCD anxiety.

Not me for sure.

But then I read What If It’s Us (and loved it), and so I tried They Both Die at the End, and it was great but also a mind-blowing book.
