I’m still going to keep my eye out for its sequel, especially since its debut trailer was incredible, but I’d be lying if I said I was optimistic. The foes you’ll confront tend to be of the bullet sponge variety, so you’ll have to rely on all your character’s melee and ranged skills in order to thoroughly eliminate them. None of this would really matter if the gameplay was good, but that’s asking a bit much. There is no way to regain ammo, it just seems to happen between scenes at random. The most noteworthy exceptions are the occasional QTE that seem like they were shoehorned in. Your arsenal consists of four weapons – a pistol, a machine gun, a shotgun, and a blade. The reason the sword can’t be used entirely instead of the gun, however, is that it’s on a cooldown. When you get down to it, Bright Memory is a $7 demo for a separate game called Bright Memory: Infinite. The graphics are really good for a game in this price range, and its almost unbelievable that this was accomplished by one person. Small, confusing, and pointless elements like this are all over Bright Memory. While the enemies are a little on the bullet spongey side for my tastes, the combat is overall pretty satisfying. I must admit that there are some aspects to the controls that are a little on the clunky side. Bright Memory is a fairly visually impressive game, with fast action and weather effects making the screen a near-constant visual feast. The game was made in Unreal Engine, and it definitely shows. In the first-person action game Bright Memory: Infinite, it is the year 2036, and strange phenomenas appear in the sky all over the world. What took it from just kind of slow to infuriating was that there was no indication that there was a cursor. At least Bright Memory sounds and looks great, though – the impressive lighting and hype tunes that kick in during enemy encounters deserve some praise. Your sword acts as another ranged weapon, which shoots beams that slice through enemies much more easily than your bullets. When you activate the swords, you have a few seconds to use them before they need to recharge. There’s not even an endless enemy mode to enjoy some mindless fun with afterward – the only thing you can do upon beating Bright Memory is replaying its main campaign all over again. You are suddenly dropped into a firefight in a high-tech facility as a girl named Shelia. The fast-paced, first-person shooter wowed critics and gamers alike during its Xbox Series X|S debut game trailer and built plenty of hype for its 2021 release. There are three different things that this happens for and it makes playing the game feel stuttery and slow because they never worked the way I wanted them to. Trying to interpret just what is going on in Bright Memory is the game’s first big challenge, and it’s one you’ll never overcome. There is a lot to like in Bright Memory, and I can’t help but wonder how fantastic it could be as an eight or ten hour experience with a coherent storyline and some extra polish. Between bad controls, a messy user experience, shallow and uninteresting gameplay, uninteresting level design and writing and cutscenes that fall flat on their faces, Bright Memory is anything but awesome. Sure, it’s the same franchise and developer, yes, the gameplay looks comparable, and the names are absolutely confusing, but there wasn’t a single moment of gameplay in Bright Memory‘s stunted hour-ish runtime that came remotely close to being as dynamic or cool as the trailer for its sequel, Bright Memory: Infinite, that we saw in May. But having the default option in place for such a tried and true FPS aiming method is a strange one. Not having the ability to pull off a forward/backward evasion maneuver is a curious design omission. There is one random QTE early on, and a few instances of you having to use your grappling hook at the right time to avoid certain death. “[Bright Memory is] something I can’t recommend in good conscience unless someone’s looking to revisit a bygone era of first-person shooters. These are what you will do a fair amount of your killing with, and each one feels pretty good to shoot. While I’ve been fairly positive about Bright Memory so far, its time to address the game’s biggest issue.
